Empowering Women

Embracing the Change: Women, Hormones & Well-Being in Later Life…

As women in her 40’s myself, going through ‘that’ transition in life, hormonal changes during perimenopause & menopause can feel scary, this phase of life, often called ‘the change’, doesn’t have to be something to fear! Instead, it can be a time to reconnect with your body, mind & prioritise self-care, balance & well-being.

This article explores how understanding hormones, embracing movement, how including soft tissue therapy can support this journey, while also recognising that one-size-fits-all solutions, like Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) are not for everyone…& that’s ok!!

Understanding Hormonal Changes in Later Life…

During perimenopause & menopause, the natural decline in hormones like oestrogen & progesterone triggers shifts in the body. These hormonal changes can lead to symptoms such as hot flashes, joint pain, disrupted sleep, mood swings, and fatigue. But these changes are not inherently negative—they’re a natural progression that marks a new chapter in a woman’s life. These aren’t the only hormones that decline in the body…but these are the ones that are widely treated.

What is crucial though, is recognising that every woman’s experience is unique. Some may have mild symptoms, while others face more significant challenges. Either way, understanding your body and working with it…not against it…can empower you during this time.

Why HRT isn’t for Everyone…

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is a popular treatment for menopausal symptoms, but it isn’t right for every woman & it certainly isn’t the only solution. Some women may not respond well to HRT due to personal health conditions, risks associated with its use, or simply because it doesn’t align with their preferences.

For those who opt out of HRT or for whom it’s not suitable, there are alternative ways to manage & embrace the changes. Soft tissue therapy and movement play powerful roles in promoting balance & well-being, offering holistic benefits without relying solely on pharmaceutical interventions. But also nutrition can play a key part in managing the symptoms of perimenopause & menopause.

The Role of Soft Tissue Therapy in Menopausal Well-Being

Soft tissue therapy can be transformative for women navigating hormonal changes. This therapeutic approach works with the muscles, fascia & connective tissues to relieve pain, improve circulation & promote relaxation. Whilst it may not ‘fix’ the pain that can be experienced in the joints, it can manage it…enabling better movement.

Managing Muscle and Joint Discomfort

Hormonal changes can lead to joint stiffness and muscle tension. Soft tissue therapy helps release built-up tension, ease aches & restore mobility, offering holistic relief without the use of medication in some cases.

Improving Sleep and Reducing Stress

Stress and poor sleep are common during menopause. Gentle massage techniques can calm the nervous system, reduce cortisol (stress hormone) levels, also support better-quality sleep. Better sleep helps to be able to cope better with stressful situations, but also make more mindful choices with regards to nutrition.

Improving Circulation

As oestrogen levels drop, circulation may slow, leading to cold extremities or sluggish recovery. Soft tissue therapy encourages healthy blood flow of new oxygenated blood, promoting vitality & energy.

Boosting Body Confidence

Aches and discomfort can leave women feeling disconnected from their bodies. Massage helps rebuild that connection, improving posture, promoting self-awareness & self-care. But also helps with getting the body moving freely, meaning regular exercise doesn’t become a chore with that comes a boost in self esteem!

Movement: The building block of resilience!!!

Staying active is one of the most effective ways to navigate hormonal changes. Regular movement enhances mood, strengthens muscles & bones, but also keeps joints mobile.

Reducing Stiffness

Hormonal shifts can make joints feel stiff, but gentle movement practices like yoga & pilates help improve flexibility & range of motion. These are often in group settings so help build connection with others that may be on this journey too.

Building Strength and Preventing Osteoporosis

Ooowwww this is one I preach about regularly! Weight-bearing exercises, such as resistance training or walking, help combat the loss of bone density often associated with menopause. Stronger bones mean a more resilient body….you don’t need to be able to lift the heaviest weight, but progressive overload is a must! That can mean you just increase what you’re able to do, even slightly over the months.

Boosting Endorphins

Exercise naturally increases endorphins…your body's feel-good chemicals. Regular movement can help combat mood swings, reduce anxiety, and improve overall mental health. Movement is magic!

Reframing the Narrative: Let’s think of Menopause as a New Beginning not the end…

Menopause often carries a stigma as a time of loss…loss of youth, vitality even control! But reframing this phase as a ‘new beginning’ can change the experience entirely. It’s a time to prioritise your health, set new goals but also embrace a deeper understanding of your body.

Knowledge is Power

Learn about the changes happening in your body. Knowledge is power, and understanding the why behind symptoms can make them less daunting. Try not to overload yourself with information, try out things that make YOU feel good! Be wary of expensive vitamins or products that claim to change your life & take away the symptoms!

Build a Support Network

Surround yourself with friends, family, or support groups where you can share experiences. Talking openly about menopause removes its stigma and helps normalise the conversation. It is estimated that there are around 13 million menopausal woman in the UK alone! Let’s all support

each other!

Celebrate Your Body’s Strength

Your body has carried you through decades of life. Celebrate its strength and adaptiveness by giving it the care it deserves. It’s not all doom & gloom, it can be seen as a good thing. One being eventually no more periods…yipeeeeee!

Empower Your Journey

Menopause isn’t something to fear…it’s a natural part of life that comes with its own challenges but also opportunities. While not every solution works for every woman, holistic approaches like soft tissue therapy, regular movement, a shift in your mindset can help you navigate this phase

with confidence!

💙 Remember, you don’t have to walk this path alone. Seek out therapies, practitioners, and routines that resonate with your needs, embrace this time as a chance to reconnect with yourself in new & empowering ways.

This is your time…step into it with strength, self-compassion & less fear 🌸
